Mission Ayden Elementary School’s mission is to empower students to learn through a safe and caring environment.
Philosophy All students can learn and succeed Students will meet high expectations Schools facilitate the important conditions for successful learning All students have dignity and worth and the need to belong Schools are partners with the home and the community. BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE, & BE RESPECTFUL
In our classroom it will be easy to remember the expectations because there are only 4! -Act Responsibly -Be Engaged -Be Safe -Be respectful!
Each day, at all times, in everything we do, we will all be respectful.
Classroom Bingo: The class as a whole has the opportunity earn 1-2 bingo chips per day by earning compliments from other teachers. When the board reaches bingo they win! This could be a Popsicle or extra time for the computers/ recess.
Communication: Parents you can contact me multiple ways. You can write a note in your child's agenda, or email me. This webpage is frequently update so be sure to check here often!
Homework: Students will have homework daily. Homework does affect your grade so be sure to bring it in, on time. Students should take their notebooks home! This enables them to refer to examples, terms and definitions, etc. so they can be more successful on their homework! Students must bring their notebooks back to school daily! There is more about homework as well as due dates under the homework tab.
Homework reinforces skills, concepts and information learned in class. Homework prepares students for upcoming class topics. Homework teaches students to work independently and develop self-discipline. Homework encourages students to take initiative and responsibility for completing a task. Homework allows parents to have an active role in their child's education and helps them to evaluate their child's progress. Homework activities relate what is learned in school to children's lives outside of school and helps to connect school learning to the real world. - By Jennifer Atkinson
PBIS--Behavior Management
Our school has implemented PBIS school wide. To learn more about PBIS please visit www.pbis.org/family.
PBIS IN OUR SCHOOL
AES will be implementing a new positive discipline program this year known as PBIS or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. Our goal is to teach standard expectations or behaviors and celebrate positive behaviors in our school. Rewards are used to celebrate and reinforce the great demonstrated behaviors.
THREE BASIC RULES We have Three basic school rules: Act Responsibly Be Engaged Be Safe
Many elements are in place to promote our use of these rules in our school and classroom.
PBIS BEHAVIOR MATRIX Throughout our building are PBIS Behavior Matrix posters. These posters define expected building behaviors. (See the matrix below)
INDIVIDUAL REINFORCEMENT
To track and reinforce student behaviors we use a clip chart system. This is also hanging in each homeroom classroom. Each student has a clip with their name on or their number on it. The clips are placed on the white square which means “Ready to Learn”. This is a great place to be! Ready to Learn means I am following the behavior matrix and I am doing what I am supposed to do. However, throughout the day students may move up or down the clip system based on their behaviors.
For positive behaviors, students can move up the clip system one step at a time from green (good day), to Blue (Great Job), to Purple (Outstanding!). Behaviors may include helping others, picking up messes one did not create, using manners, getting ready right away without reminders, recognition by others for great choices, etc.
One may also move down the clip system one step at a time. Moving to yellow (Think About It) to orange (Options) to red (Contact Home). Yellow indicates I have not been making good choices, have been given warnings, and still am not making good choices – I need to think about it. Orange indicates I have continued to make bad choices, therefore, I must clip down and the teacher may decide the type of consequence I need: walking laps, a time-out in ISS or silent lunch. Red indicates a contact home. Any behaviors after this are referred to the office.
It is very important to note that students can move up and down the clip chart one step at a time throughout the day!!! If a student is asked to clip down, but turns around their behavior, they can clip up. At the end of the day, each student’s behavior will be noted in the planner.
OFFICE REFERRAL PROCESS/PROCEDURES
Student clips to red Office referral completed and sent to office with student Administration meets with student and consequence is assigned Copy of referral sent home with student Copy of referral sent to teacher
IN SCHOOL SUSPENSION (ISS) • Opportunity for student to process action and problem solve how to change behavior • Staffed by teacher assistant every day
REWARDS/INCENTIVES Angel Bucks Angel bucks will be given school-wide to reinforce positive behaviors. The angel bucks will be color coded: classroom teachers will use yellow, administration will use white, and encore teachers will use blue. The bucks will be given out on an individual basis as the behaviors correlate to the AES Behavior Matrix. Any students that ends the day in the good day, great job, or outstanding tiers will receive one angel buck for that day.
Angel Store Students will have the opportunity to exchange angel bucks for rewards on a weekly basis. They may exchange as many bucks as they choose or decide to bank them to save for a greater reward at a later date.
